Graphic Design
M.C. Escher ( 1898 -1972)
| Throughout his life Maurits Cornelis
Escher (he used only M.C.) remarked on his inability to understand mathematics, declaring
himself absolutely innocent of training or knowledge in the exact sciences'. Yet even as a
child, Escher was intrigued by order and symmetry. The fascination later led him to study
patterns of tiles at the Alhambra in Granada, to look al geometric drawings in
mathematical papers (with the advice of his geologist brother) and ultimately to pursue
his own unique ideas for tiling a plane. |

Architecture and Design
Gerrit T.Rietveld (1888-1964)
| Gerit Rietveld was a talented all round
Designer. He was a member of "De
Stijl". At the right you
see two extreme examples of his work; his famous "chair" (1918), generally
regarded as the first really modernist chair and the "Schroeder House ". The
design of this house was contrary to all existing design norms. All people that did live
in the house loved the design, but complained about the technical construction. |
